How to ensure security and privacy in smart city context? With a wider range of IoT devices being used, which corresponds to a larger flow of information being received or sent within modern smart cities, there is a need to look for methods, design and operating principles that minimize the risks to the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of the data.
This will be the motto for the 1st Webinar of a series of Webinars that will showcase the project’s results, after two years of intensive research on how the M-Sec architecture could better solve security challenges in hyper-connected smart cities, and it will be dedicated to the IoT layer of the M-Sec solution.
What is the importance of the IoT layer in the cope of the M-Sec solution? According to Arturo Medela, Responsible for R&D at TST, “this layer includes all devices, sensors, and their corresponding low-level networks that are met in IoT ecosystems”. Therefore, the IoT layer “represents the first stage of accessing into M-Sec framework and involves the components that will feed the Marketplace, which will be the more visible link to the outside world and interested entrepreneurs”.
In what way improvements in the IoT layer of the M-Sec solution will improve peoples’ lives in hyper-connected smart cities? For Arturo Medela, “the role citizens play in modern smart cities is paramount to maintain a constantly evolving ecosystem” and, in most cases, “the actions citizens may take alongside the ones the municipality will conduct, will be decided upon information provided from the IoT layer. Therefore, a strong, safe and reliable IoT layer will, in turn, provide useful information to take proper decisions”.
In this engaging Webinar, our experts Aamir Bokhari, from YNU, Arturo Medela, from TST, and Akira Tsuge, from Keio, will present fact-based objective information on their research to reach a truly-secured IoT system in the framework of the M-Sec project. The presentation will focus on 3 important topics: The role of IoT in Smart Cities, associated threats and risks, and some innovative approaches to ensure security and privacy in a smart city.
What were the major challenges and future developments regarding the IoT layer of the M-Sec solution? For Arturo Medela, “apart from the physical challenges that any kind of device deployed outdoors may be subjected to, it is worth paying attention to the attacks produced over the communication channel and even on the IoT layer devices themselves, trying to conduct phishing activities and erase data or provide erroneous one”. Therefore, “the so-called M-Sec IoT layer will test innovative methods to increase its security while at the same time it is scalable to let it grow by the hand of future advances”.
